App Store Optimization: Getting Found After You Ship

Launching your app is only half the job. App store optimization is how people actually discover it once it's live.

App Store Optimization: Getting Found After You Ship

Building the app is often treated as the finish line, but shipping to the App Store or Google Play is closer to a starting gun. Both stores contain millions of listings, and neither ranks apps by how well they were built — they rank them by signals that most founders never think about until traffic doesn't show up. App Store Optimization, ASO, is the practice of tuning those signals deliberately instead of leaving discoverability to chance.

ASO is often compared to SEO, and the comparison is useful: both are about matching what people search for to what your listing signals, and both reward sustained, incremental effort over one-time tricks.

The core elements you actually control

  • App title and subtitle. These carry real search weight on both platforms. A title that includes a genuine, relevant keyword — not stuffed, just accurate — outperforms a purely brand-only name in search visibility.
  • Keyword fields and metadata. iOS has a dedicated keyword field; Android relies more heavily on the description text. Research what your target users actually search for, not just the terms you'd use internally to describe the app.
  • Description copy. Beyond keywords, the first few lines need to convince someone to keep reading or tap install — most users won't expand the full description.
  • Screenshots and preview video. These are frequently the single biggest factor in conversion once someone lands on your listing. Feature real functionality, lead with the strongest benefit, and design for how they'll look as small thumbnails in search results, not just full-size.
  • Icon design. It has to be recognizable and legible at a tiny size among a grid of competitors — simplicity usually wins over detail here.
  • Category selection. Choosing a slightly less crowded but still accurate category can meaningfully change your relative visibility.

Ratings and reviews carry outsized weight

Both stores factor ratings into ranking, and users factor them into their install decision even more heavily. A few practical habits help:

  • Prompt for a rating after a genuinely positive moment in the app experience — right after a task is completed successfully, not on first open
  • Respond to negative reviews when a real fix is possible; a visible, professional response matters to prospective users reading reviews
  • Never incentivize or manipulate reviews — both platforms actively police this, and the penalties range from ranking suppression to removal

Updates, retention, and the ranking algorithm

Store algorithms weigh more than the listing itself:

  • Update frequency and quality signal an actively maintained app, which both stores factor into ranking
  • Retention and engagement metrics — how many users come back, and how often — are increasingly significant, meaning ASO and product quality are no longer fully separable concerns
  • Uninstall rate shortly after install is a negative signal; it often traces back to a mismatch between what the listing promised and what the app actually delivers

A realistic cadence

ASO isn't a one-time setup. Treat it like an ongoing practice: review keyword performance monthly, refresh screenshots when the product changes meaningfully, and A/B test icon or screenshot variants where the platform supports it. This work sits naturally alongside the engineering side of mobile app development — the same launch plan should include both from the start, not treat ASO as an afterthought once the app is already live.

Where to go from here

A technically excellent app with no discoverability plan will underperform a merely good app with a deliberate ASO strategy. Plan for both from day one, and revisit the listing with the same seriousness you'd apply to a product update.
