Technical SEO Checklist: 15 Fixes That Move the Needle

A working checklist of technical SEO fixes worth checking on any site, grouped by crawlability, indexing, structure, and performance.

Technical SEO Checklist: 15 Fixes That Move the Needle

Technical SEO has a reputation for being complicated, but most of the value comes from a checklist, not a mystery. The following fifteen items cover the categories that most reliably affect whether search engines can find, understand, and fairly rank your pages. Not every item applies to every site, but each is worth checking at least once.

Crawlability

  • Confirm robots.txt is not accidentally blocking important sections — a common and easy-to-miss mistake after a redesign or migration
  • Submit and maintain an accurate XML sitemap — remove pages that no longer exist and add new ones as they launch
  • Fix broken internal links — every dead link wastes crawl budget and hurts the experience for anyone who clicks it
  • Check for crawl traps — infinite filter combinations or calendar pages that generate endless low-value URLs

Indexing

  • Audit canonical tags — make sure they point to the version of a page you actually want indexed, especially with URL parameters or duplicate content
  • Check for accidental "noindex" tags — left over from a staging environment or a redesign
  • Review pages competing for the same keyword — internal competition can dilute rankings that a single strong page would otherwise earn
  • Confirm redirects are clean 301s where appropriate — chains of multiple redirects slow crawling and dilute link value

Structure and content signals

  • Use one clear H1 per page and a logical heading hierarchy below it
  • Write unique title tags and meta descriptions for every important page — templated, duplicate versions across many pages are a common and avoidable gap
  • Add structured data (schema markup) where it applies — products, articles, FAQs, and local business information all have relevant schema types that help search engines understand content
  • Fix duplicate content — near-identical pages, whether from URL parameters, printer-friendly versions, or copied product descriptions

Performance and mobile

  • Confirm mobile usability — tap target sizes, readable font sizes without zooming, and no horizontal scrolling
  • Address Core Web Vitals issues — see our related post for detail, but this remains a baseline expectation rather than a bonus
  • Check HTTPS is fully enforced — including no mixed-content warnings from images or scripts still loading over plain HTTP

How to use this list

Run through it in order — crawlability and indexing issues can mask everything below them, since a page search engines cannot properly find or index will not benefit from perfect on-page work. Most sites we review have real issues in three or four of these fifteen areas, not all of them, so prioritize by how many pages an issue affects rather than trying to fix everything at once.

Tools that help without an agency

Free tools from the major search engines can surface a large share of these issues on their own — indexing status, mobile usability warnings, and Core Web Vitals data are all available without a paid subscription. A basic crawling tool can catch broken links, duplicate titles, and missing structured data across a whole site in one pass. None of this replaces judgment about which fixes matter most for your specific business, but it removes the guesswork about where problems exist in the first place.

If a full technical audit is more than your team wants to take on internally, this is exactly the kind of structured review a growth-focused SEO partner can run and hand back with a prioritized list.

Where to go from here

Technical SEO rewards consistency more than intensity — a quarterly pass through this list will catch most drift before it costs you visibility. If you'd like a second pair of eyes on this, tell us what you're building — we reply within one business day.
